Effective job hunting: how to boost your chances of success

Today's job market presents numerous challenges, and landing a new role can be more complex than it appears. In my book Career Management in the VUCA World, I share insights gained as a headhunter and career advisor, showing how to approach job searching strategically and effectively. With proper preparation and a well-thought-out strategy, your chances of success can increase significantly.

The Limits of a Traditional Approach

Many candidates limit their job search to responding to postings on popular job portals. While this tactic may sometimes yield results, it’s far from the most effective—especially if you're aiming for a timely and well-matched opportunity. Statistics show that most job openings never make it to public listings—they belong to what is known as the hidden job market.

A Diversified Job Search Strategy

To enhance your chances of securing a position, it’s worth adopting a diversified approach that includes:

  • Networking – Building and leveraging your network of contacts.

  • Direct Applications – Sending your resume to companies you're interested in, even if they haven’t posted any vacancies.

  • Working with Headhunters – Engaging professional recruitment agencies.

  • Applying to Select Job Ads – Responding selectively to relevant openings.

  • Building Your Online Presence – Being active on LinkedIn.

 

The Hidden Job Market

Networking and direct applications are key to accessing the hidden job market. Many opportunities are never publicly advertised. Take, for example, a company planning to expand a department—HR may first consult internal databases, ask employees for referrals, or reach out to candidates who previously submitted their applications proactively.

That’s why it’s crucial to nurture relationships and stay active within your network. Reach out to people who may help you with your next career move and let them know you're open to change. Have your CV and cover email ready, and send them to companies that align with your interests.

Researching the Market and Companies

An effective job search also requires thorough market research. Understanding industry trends, identifying key players, and analyzing development prospects will help you tailor your applications to better match employers’ needs. Knowledge about the company you're applying to could be the deciding factor in whether you’re selected.

Working with Headhunters

Partnering with professional recruiters can open additional doors. Identify recruitment firms specializing in your sector and invest in long-term relationships with them. Staying active on LinkedIn and maintaining contact with headhunters increases your visibility when the right opportunity arises.
